Common pests in Jupiter, FL: coastal homes vs. Jupiter Farms

Short answer: The most common pests in Jupiter, FL are termites, roof rats, palmetto bugs, ants, mosquitoes and lawn pests like chinch bugs. Coastal homes near the Inlet, the Intracoastal and the Loxahatchee River tend to see more drywood termites, roof rats and palmetto bugs, while Jupiter Farms and other western properties with acreage see more rodents around barns and feed, fire ants in open turf and mosquitoes near canals.

Jupiter stretches from beachfront and riverfront homes to planned neighborhoods like Abacoa and the rural acreage of Jupiter Farms. The pests overlap, but the property type changes what shows up first. Here’s how it breaks down.

Coastal Jupiter, Jupiter Island, Tequesta and Juno Beach

Homes close to the water, from Juno Beach up through the Inlet neighborhoods, Tequesta and Jupiter Island, share a few things: salt air, humidity, mature palms and sea grape, and plenty of wood trim, docks and outdoor living space. What we look for most:

  • Drywood termites. They live inside attic framing, trim, window frames and furniture. Small piles of pellets and shed wings on windowsills are the usual giveaway. Read drywood vs. subterranean termites.
  • Roof rats. UF/IFAS notes roof rats are the most common rodent pest in Florida and nest in old palm frond skirts, using branches, vines and wires to get around. Palms and trees touching the roof are a common way into the attic. See our Rodent Control & Exclusion service.
  • Palmetto bugs. Moist mulch beds, palms and storm drains near the water keep these large cockroaches close by. See why palmetto bugs come inside.

Abacoa and central Jupiter neighborhoods

Planned communities in central Jupiter often have lakes, irrigated St. Augustine lawns, long hedges and HOA-maintained common areas. That brings up:

  • Ants, especially ghost ants and big-headed ants trailing along pavers, pool decks and plumbing. Read ghost ants vs. big-headed ants.
  • Mosquitoes around lakes, retention ponds and containers during the rainy season. See mosquito control.
  • Lawn and hedge pests like chinch bugs and ficus whitefly. See chinch bugs vs. sod webworms.
  • Subterranean termites, which come up from the soil and can reach newer homes through slab joints and plumbing openings.

Jupiter Farms and western Jupiter

Jupiter Farms is a different setting: larger lots, horses and other animals, barns, sheds, feed rooms, fences, canals and wooded areas. On these properties we usually focus on:

  • Rodents around barns and feed. Stored feed, birdseed and fallen fruit attract rats. Keep feed in sealed metal or heavy plastic bins and clean up spills.
  • Fire ants building mounds in open turf, paddocks and along driveways, especially after rain.
  • Mosquitoes near canals, low spots, water troughs and anything that holds rainwater.
  • Termites in outbuildings. Sheds, fence posts, wood piles and anything wooden touching the soil give subterranean termites an easy start. Keep firewood and lumber off the ground and away from the house.

For yards and acreage, our Landscape Care service covers turf and ornamental pests, and general pest service can include the home’s exterior perimeter and outbuildings.

A quick Jupiter checklist

  • Trim palms, trees and vines back from the roof. UF/IFAS notes that rats, ants and termites use limbs touching the house as a bridge.
  • Pull mulch and soil back from the foundation and keep sprinklers off the walls.
  • Empty saucers, buckets and containers after storms.
  • Store feed, pet food and birdseed in sealed containers.
  • Look for pellets, shed wings and mud tubes, especially during spring termite swarm season. Our termite signs guide shows what to look for.
