Fleas are small dark, reddish-brown, blood-sucking insects. These insects can compress their bodies and move easily through the hairs on theirs hosts bodies. These insects have long legs that are perfect for jumping. Florida has several species of fleas, but the flea most commonly found is the Cat flea. Cat fleas attack warm blooded animals such as dogs, humans, chickens, rabbits, and rodents. Flea eggs can also lay dormant for up to 180 days so usually two pest control treatments over the course of 7-10 days are necessary to eliminate all fleas.

How Far Can a Flea Jump

A flea can jump 200 times its body length, about 13 inches. If this was a 6ft man, this would equal to almost 300 ft long

Fleas On Pets

The best offense is a good defense when it comes to fleas. In most cases if fleas are present in a home is it due to pets accidentally bringing them inside. We recommend having your pets placed on a flea and tick medication from a veterinarian to help prevent an infestation before it starts.

Are Fleas Dangerous?

Fleas can present several issues that can be dangerous to humans and their pests.

1.Fleas are known to cause dermatitis which causes an intense itching in pets that can develop in infected scabs when scratched over time.

2. In serious cases, fleas can cause anemia in pets if left untreated that could lead to possible death.

3. Fleas can carry diseases such as the bubonic plague and murine typhus.

4. Fleas help spread tapeworms that can cause havoc on pets and children.

Fleas will bite humans but cannot live on them for long periods of time. Generally, if you have a flea problem inside the home it is due to one of your pets being infested by fleas. In rare cases, we do see flea infestations where pets are not present. These circumstances usually require a thorough inspection of the home to find out why the fleas are there.

Fleas on your pet can be eliminated by having your pets treated by a veterinarian. We recommend having your home treated as well, the best time to have it treated is when your pet is being treated at the vet's office. Just prior to having your home treated we recommend having all pet beds and bed linens ran through the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes to help eliminate fleas. Treatment requires for all pets and humans to be out of the home for four hours and usually two treatments spread over a week are needed to gain full control.

As previously mentioned, having your pet being placed on a flea and tick medication is one of the best preventive measures you can take when dealing with these insects. We also recommend avoiding areas with your pets where you believe fleas may be present such as an area on a walk where feral animals are present.
