Rodents

Rats and Mice are very problematic pests in South Florida. These pests use manmade structures such as homes and warehouses to infest and breed in. In Florida we tend to deal with three types of rodents: Norway Rats, Roof Rats, and House Mice. Each type of rodent has traits that make them distinguishable from each other, but they can all lead to serious issues when left unchecked.

Is That a Squirrel, I Am Hearing in My Attic?

Chances are any noises you may be hearing from your attic space are not coming from squirrels. Roof rats are great climbers and prefer to nest off the ground, these rodents frequently infest South Floridan’s homes and cause damage to insulation with their feces and urine.

How Quickly Can Rodents Reproduce?

Depending on the type of rodent, one female rodent can give birth of up to 84 offspring in one year. Rodents can become sexually mature anywhere from 6 weeks to 5 months depending on the species so rodents can take over a home in no time.

Are Rodents Dangerous?

Absolutely, rodents can cause significant problems for homeowners including health, mental and financial issues. These pests carry at least 10 different types of disease and known to bite children when sleeping. Rodents are also known to chew on electrical wires inside homes which can lead to fires.

Rodents frequently defecate and urinate in the areas they inhabit; this issue can lead to serious biological issues in attic spaces. Often times, insulation needs to be completely removed after an infestation and this is not covered by homeowner’s insurance in Florida. On average, replacing insulation for even small houses can be north of $3000.00.

Rodents like humans need food, shelter, and water to survive. In Florida these are easily found in the communities we live in: lakes, fruit trees, and attic spaces to name a few.

Once rodents have infested a home, certain steps must be taken to eliminate the problem. First, the entry points must be identified then sealed off. Next, trapping of the rodents must take place and depending on the infestation removal of the infested material may be necessary, we also recommend installing rodent stations on the exterior of the home that contain a toxic bait which reduces the local rodent population.

Having your attic inspected annually and having your home rodent proofed by a professional pest company can help prevent rodents from infesting your home. In addition, adding rodent stations on the outside of the home can help prevent rodent populations from exploding in your area.
