American Cockroaches (Palmetto Bugs)

One of the most common insects’ customers in South Florida encounter are American cockroaches. The cockroaches are large compared to the German cockroach and are a reddish-brown color with a yellow band that outlines the area right behind their head. Typically, these roaches make their way into the home looking for food, shelter or water. If you are seeing these cockroaches on a regular basis (multiple times a week-month) this may be a cause for concern as these bugs can be an indicator of problems such as broken pipes, water leaks, or possible unseen conducive conditions.

German Cockroaches

German cockroaches can become a major problem for property owners quickly. These bugs are rapid breeders and can cost business and homeowners significant amounts of money due to the damage they can cause. German roaches are identified by the feces left behind in the areas they inhabit, these feces can be so significant that entire kitchens need to be remodeled due to major infestations. Reach out to us today if you suspect you have a German roach infestation, we can help treat the issue before they cause significant damage.

Are Cockroaches Dangerous?

Yes, cockroaches are known to spread bacteria that can cause many different types of diseases and are also known to negatively affect people with allergies and asthma. These bugs are known for leaving feces in the areas that they inhabit and, in some cases, will bite humans if provoked though bites are not dangerous.

Cockroaches are looking for conducive conditions to thrive in. Conducive conditions can be described as hot and humid areas, areas where food sources are present and predators are not, cluttered areas that act as hiding spots, or any area with food, shelter, and water.

Cockroaches can be tough to treat due to a multitude of reasons. These insects are very good at hiding, have become resistant to many types of pesticides, and breed quickly. A properly trained pest control operator can use multiple products to treat the problem and gain long term control.

It is possible to prevent cockroaches a few ways such as: 1. Properly weatherstripping your doors and windows. 2. Open up packages on the outside of your home and dispose of the cardboard immediately (cockroaches are known to hitch rides on packages that sit in warehouses). 3. Practice good sanitation in the home, wash dishes immediately and do not leave food out overnight. 4. Eliminate clutter around the home. 5. Hire a competent pest control service and have your home serviced regularly.
